Carroll High School Student Tops Group Of 4,000 To Earn College Scholarship

Only 30 scholarship recipients were selected from over 4,000 applications from across the state, and one Carroll High School student made the cut. Grant Meiners will be receiving $2,000 for his post-secondary educational expenses, and Carroll High School will get $500 from the Iowa Student Loan 2017-2018 Financial Know-How Challenge to be used to improve or implement financial literacy and scholarship programs. Meiners and all other applicants completed two online financial literacy courses and completed an assessment, with the top 30 scores selected for scholarship consideration. More than 70 students tied for a top score on the assessment, so judges were then tasked with evaluating essays on what “responsible borrowing” means to them. The program, which is designed to help students and families avoid the pitfalls of heavy student loan debt, is working to help these students understand the impact of debt before they get in over their heads. More information on the next round, the 2018-2019 Iowa Financial Know-How Challenge: Senior Scholarship, is being finalized and details will be released soon.
