Former Carroll County Deputy Recorder, Kathy Schwaller, was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to the Recorder position on Feb. 1, following the retirement of Marilyn Dopheide. A registered Democrat, Schwaller says she was proud to have submitted more than 500 signatures last week to be included on the ballot this November. Born and raised in Carroll County, she jokes that with Halbur and Steffes ties, she is probably related to most of the county’s residents. Her five kids and those other family members are excited about her campaign.

For Schwaller, the position is about the people, not the party lines. She says her background in the banking industry and as a bookkeeper was instrumental in preparing her for the record keeping and statistical elements of the Recorder position. However, it was her work as a certified nursing assistant that gave her an added appreciation of our people, our history and the importance of maintaining their story through official documents. These attributes have been of great benefit in helping people ever since 2004, when she started part-time with the department.

She says the biggest asset she brings to the position is the knowledge and experience she already has, coupled with what was instilled in her and her nine siblings—a strong work ethic and an appreciation for the needs of others

Schwaller, who currently lives in Manning, is excited to be traveling the county with her grandchildren, meeting people and getting word out about her campaign. She adds that the one thing she wants everyone to know before they meet her in person is that God put us all on this planet to help each other, and she wants to continue doing just that for every person walking up to that window. She is there to help them navigate through the most exciting, the most difficult, the most frustrating and oftentimes the most confusing times of their lives.
