Pam Kendrick was born and raised in Carroll, and was sad to leave the community when her position with the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) was eliminated and necessitated a move to Ankeny. She was proud to live in a city that embraced and understood the story of her daughter’s life. Kelli Kendrick was born with Cerebral Palsy and later developed a terminal lung illness. For all of her 27 years on earth, Kelli was a fighter, beating the odds and living well past her predicted 15-year life span. Kelli passed away last Oct. 12, and her family wanted to share her life story, which was based on the simple formula of inclusion, belonging, love and a strong support system. They say this combination was more powerful than any disability, and they wanted to give to a local effort that was sharing that message.
Pam and her family say it is difficult for others to understand the challenges of having a loved one with a disability and how that impacts the entire family.
They are all pleased, however, that they are seeing society beginning to recognize things that are routinely taken for granted, creating that inclusiveness for all. She says they know what the Tigges family and others in the area are going through, and they really want to help offer these kids the opportunity to grow. To give families and children a place to play, gain friendships and just experience these things the same as any other kid does. Pat and Alie Tigges, seven-year-old Kellan’s parents, are responsible for educating the entire area of the need for an all-inclusive playground for children of all abilities and spearheading the fundraising effort. Alie says there are just not words to express the gratitude they have for everyone, and especially the Kendrick family during this very difficult time.
Pat says they were contacted by the funeral home about the memorial and they couldn’t help but think how humbling it is that this family’s thoughts turned to their effort during one of the most difficult times in their lives. It really hits you and causes you to drive on harder to help others, he says. And Pam says she knows that her daughter will live on through the love, laughter and joy that this will bring to so many others.
Kelli was the daughter of Pam and the late Steve Kendrick and has three brothers, Joe Owen, Ryan Owen and Doug Kendrick.
