Every year, Des Moines Area Community College’s (DMACC) Diversity Commission presents their Tapestry Award to recognize members of the DMACC family who exemplify the three Cs of character, college and community. The winner was announced Friday, Oct. 20 at the Fall President’s Day meeting, and Carroll campus librarian, Lisa Dreesman, received the award. Provost, Joel Lundstrom, says that Dreesman is the embodiment of the requirements for the award as she is a staunch supporter of diversity and awareness on the Carroll campus, she engages in events and activities and greets everyone with a welcoming spirit. Lundstrom shared the nomination letter responsible for Dreesman being selected. He says he did not pen the nomination, that it was actually submitted anonymously. The author describes Dreesman’s passion for advocacy in both her personal and professional lives. She was responsible for book club and discussion groups that opened a forum for conversations about racial inequality, the impact in people’s lives and how to incorporate more diversity into the classroom. She also contributes to student-led drives and educational events. On campus, she presents a welcoming attitude to all as a way to shore up their community. The author also says that outside of her work, Dreesman is actively involved in promoting awareness about mental health issues and suicide prevention.
