For the second time in roughly six months, the St. Anthony Regional Hospital (SARH) has learned their name is being used by individuals attempting to scam money out of area residents. On Thursday afternoon, officials at St. Anthony issued a warning about a person who claims to be calling on behalf of the organization to solicit donations for cancer research. They also caution people to never trust caller ID as many of these scams are sophisticated and can use technology to make it appear as if the call is coming from a legitimate business. They want to make sure that residents know they will never ask for credit card information, donations or fundraising support over the phone. If you do receive a call from someone claiming to represent St. Anthony and they are requesting money, do not donate over the phone. Ask the caller to mail you the information and always contact St. Anthony at 792-3581 to verify whether or not this is a legitimate request. St. Anthony has been in contact with local law enforcement and the Iowa Attorney General’s office to make them aware of the situation. A similar warning was issued in April when they were notified by a local resident of the same type of scam.
