The Carroll County Board of Supervisors held a special meeting this morning (Friday) to canvas Tuesday’s school board elections. Auditor Kourtney Irlbeck provided the supervisors with vote totals for the winners of the Carroll Community and Glidden-Ralston School District boards and the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Director position.
There was no change over the numbers reported on Tuesday night. Supervisors discussed the low voter turnout that is traditionally seen at the September school elections, particularly in areas with uncontested races. This year there were just shy of 12.4 percent of registered voters in the Glidden-Ralston School District that cast ballots, but only about one-and-a-quarter percent of the registered voters in the Carroll Community School District. The state of Iowa is looking at making a change and integrating the school board elections into the November general elections instead. Irlbeck says that, from what she has heard, there is a possibility that by 2019 they will hold the school and city elections on the same day.
