The City Council in Sac City has introduced limitations to when fireworks can be discharged within city limits at their most recent meeting. In the first reading of the new ordinance, the city will separate fireworks into two categories: sales and discharge. All firework retailers in Sac City will require a permit from City Hall for $500, proof of insurance and a site plan for fire inspectors. Sales are limited to commercial districts in permanent buildings from June 1 to July 8 and from Dec. 10 to Jan. 3. In a temporary structure, such as a tent or, sales are restricted to June 13 to July 8. As for lighting fireworks, City Administrator, Jamie Lawrence, says they will be allowed again next year, but the responsibility lies with the users.
Under the new ordinance, fireworks can be set off on private property in city limits from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. from July 1 to July 8 with the hours extended to 11 p.m. on the holiday. Fireworks are also allowed on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 from 12 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. and again on Jan. 1 from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. When fireworks were made legal on May 9 this year, the city opted to go by state regulations. Lawrence says they did not have many issues with those requirements.
Ordinance changes require at least three readings before they can go into effect. The next Sac City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. in the Sac City Municipal Utilities Building.
