Give, But Give Wisely to Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts

Iowa Attorney General, Tom Miller, fully supports Iowans giving to the relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey victims, but says if you are going to give, do it wisely. “Iowans are already stepping up to help the staggering number of people impacted by this unprecedented hurricane and flooding event,” Miller says. “I want to ensure that Iowans trying to help people who are suffering aren’t themselves victimized by scammers.” His office offers some tips for donating, including knowing who you are giving to. It is best to donate to established and familiar organizations. Everyone should be wary of callers, emails and social media posts seeking donations and do not give unless you are absolutely certain of who is soliciting donations and who they represent. Avoid providing cash to people who show up at your door. Check their identification and don’t let someone pressure you into allowing them inside your home. Be cautious about crowdfunding. Some of these are legitimate, but there are also ones to avoid. And always verify and evaluate a charity before giving. Much of this can be done through an online search. One of the most recognized disaster relief agencies, the American Red Cross, is accepting donations online. More information on how to help through their secure site can be found below.
