Fun-Filled, Completely Free Event For Seniors Coming Back To Carroll In September

A group of area businesses and volunteers are banding together again this year to host the second annual Senior Fun Day at the Carroll Rec Center on Wednesday, Sept. 20. One of the organizers, Jane Lawler with Carroll Area Nursing Service (CANS), says that the informational, fun-filled gathering was a natural spin off from a local group that disbanded a couple of years ago.

This three-and-a-half hour come-and-go event will feature educational booths with health and safety information, access to resources, food, beverages and other treats, gifts, door prizes with a big door prize drawing at the end of the day, a free Flex and Stretch water fitness class in the pool at the Carroll Rec Center and much more.

Lawler adds they are not sure what Wetrich has in store for them, but she knows it will be a very interesting and a highly-popular presentation. Last year’s Senior Fun Day began with a moving tribute to veterans at a special pinning ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Kindred Hospice is inviting all veterans and their friends and family members to take part in that again this year. Veterans are asked to be at the Carroll Rec Center auditorium at 8:15 a.m. to line up for the ceremony, and there is a backstage area that can be accessed easily by people of all capabilities. Lawler says last year’s pinning was something that meant a great deal to veterans and family members alike.

The hosts are pleased with the change in venues this year. The armory, where Senior Fun Day was held last year, was slated for renovations, so the Rec Center volunteered to house the event, which will provide more separation for the wide variety of activities that will be taking place. Lawler stresses that the most important thing for the seniors to understand is that the day is completely free, from the coffee and rolls to the document shredding services and blood pressure checks and everything in between. Seniors will be asked to fill out a survey and provide ideas for future Fun Days to help ensure that topics of interest to them are included. RSVP will have volunteers on hand to assist. Everyone will get a bag of goodies when they come in and there will be an information desk set up right out front to answer questions and help guide attendees.
