The over-tightening of lug nuts is believed to be responsible for a two-vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon in Jefferson. Officers with the Jefferson Police Department responded to the 400 block of South Elm Street to conduct an investigation. They reported that Darwin Glade of Minburn was traveling northbound on South Elm in a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 when his rear tire came loose and separated from the vehicle. Jeremy McHargue of Grand Junction was at the intersection of West South Street and South Elm when the tire came off, striking the front passenger corner of his 2016 Ford Fusion. Glade told officers that he had new tires installed on the vehicle about a week prior, and it appeared the lug nuts were over-tightened, breaking the studs. No injuries were reported, but there was an estimate $300 in damage to the axle of Glade’s truck and $500 in damage to the McHargue vehicle. No citations were issued in the incident.
