Calhoun County Relay for Life held their annual event last Thursday, June 8, with a new twist. Participants walked the Courthouse Square in Rockwell City to raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society’s effort in finding a cure for all forms of cancer. The Carnival of Hope theme incorporated a kiddie parade, bounce houses, lawn games along with food, dancing and shopping in conjunction with the traditional survivors’ ceremony and relay. The event raised $31,800, which included $4,600 in sponsorships. “This was truly a county-wide show of support, and the most in sponsorships that Calhoun County has received in the last five years,” says Ann Hoeppner, community manager for the Relay for Life Midwest division of the American Cancer Society.” She adds that, “Manson and Lake City sponsors stayed strong and Rockwell City and Pomeroy sponsors stepped up with great support.” Plans are already in the works for next year’s Calhoun County Relay for Life event, which will again be held in Rockwell City. The county is on a three-year rotation for hosting communities, with the event being shared between Lake City, Manson and Rockwell City.
