Three groups from the Carroll Middle School (CMS) MakerSquad Club traveled to Ames last month to compete in the HyperStream of Iowa Virtual Robotics Competition and received top merits for their work. The students were tasked to design and program an autonomous robot to complete an obstacle course in the fastest time. The young engineers used Lego NXT or EV3 Mindstorm constructor sets to build their machines. Sixth-graders, Miles Bogue, Blake Heiman and Bryton Treadway received third place overall for their creation. Seventh-graders, Dani Loneman, Mercedes Warnke, Evan Nelson and Alanna Schuur were awarded first place for best creative programming, second place in best design and third place for best use of a sensor. The other seventh-grade group, Treven Haberl and Bryce Bowman, took second place in best use of sensor. These student all participate in CMS’ MakerSquad, created by teachers, Kelli Schulz and Kelly Borchers, which allows students to explore their interests in Science, Engineering, Technology, Arts and Math (STEAM) related fields after school each week.
