The Calhoun County Relay for Life is putting out a call to all residents to support the upcoming American Cancer Society Relay event on Thursday, June 8. This year’s theme is “Carnival of Hope,” and will get underway at 5:30 p.m. at the Calhoun County Courthouse Square in Rockwell City. There will be family-friendly activities and entertainment, including inflatables, temporary tattoos and a kiddie parade to remind everyone of the ultimate goal to eliminate cancer for our future generations. Cancer survivors will be honored with their own lap and a special ceremony. At dusk, the Luminaria Ceremony will take place to honor those fighting cancer as well as those who have lost their battle. There will be food vendors, dance performances and musical entertainment from the Rockin’ 88s. Participants will take their laps around the courthouse square in a year that is seeing some different ideas implemented. “We are thrilled for this year’s event as we are changing a few things,” said Chair, Joleen Schmitt. “By having it on a weeknight, we hope more people will be able to participate and come by to cheer everyone on and help us remember, celebrate and fight back.” She added that moving the event downtown is a fun change of pace.
