City Council members, the mayor and city staff thanked the Carroll Cemetery Sexton, John Snyder, on Monday afternoon for the hard work and extra time he has put into helping them reach their combined vision for the new Carroll City Cemetery building. Council member Clay Haley added he thought one more person needed to be recognized for the 2,400-square foot metal facility on Grant Road.
Snyder and three other men make up the staff that will be working out of the building, and they are all grateful for the storage capacity, the shop space and the ability to pull the cemetery vehicles into the bays for overnight storage and cleaning. It is not only a convenience for them, it is streamlining their work as they do not need to shuffle equipment to various storage locations around the city. Snyder thanked the community leaders for making this project a priority, and added that building provides them a more comfortable, presentable space to meet with family members.
The addition of a three-sided storage bin outside has already proven its value, as Snyder says even with the recent heavy rains and driving winds, the dirt stored inside stayed dry and allowed the crew to continue the maintenance and upkeep of the grounds. According to Parks and Recreation Director, Jack Wardell, there are only a couple of minor punch list items that are yet unfinished on the $536,819 building, but they expect those to be done in the next couple of weeks. Snyder says they have left space for a path to get equipment to the grounds without traveling on the roadway and for the future placement of an information kiosk to assist visitors with locating grave sites.
