Break In The Weather Allowed Planting To Progress

After a wet start to last week, warmer and dryer weather has allowed Iowa farmers to get into the fields, and now there are over half of the corn acres planted. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Bill Northey says, “If the good weather holds, we will continue to see significant progress on both corn and soybean planting the next several days.” For the week ending May 7, there were 3.4 days suitable for fieldwork, however below normal temperatures slowed crop emergence. Fifty-two percent of the corn crop is planted, but is still a week behind last year and slightly behind the five-year average. Seven percent of the corn has emerged, six days behind last year and four days behind the average.
