Students Blast Rockets Into The Sky At Over 300 MPH During 14th Annual Rocket Rally

Rockets shot through the sky Tuesday morning as Carroll High School (CHS) physics students began the 14th Annual Rocket Rally. Seventeen CHS and Ar-We-Va students worked together to build and launch 10 different crafts. Senior, Jared Cheney, says building a rocket from scratch is no walk in the park.

The rockets reached nearly six feet tall, and Cheney says they can reach incredible speeds and heights.

After the initial data collection was complete, one rocket reached speeds of nearly 340 mph and over 2,000 feet in elevation. Scott Duhrkopf, physics and calculus instructor, has hosted Rocket Rally for over a decade and is continually changing its format.

Not every student will end up working in aerospace engineering or physics, but Duhrkopf says the lessons learned apply in both students’ lives and careers.

Rocket Rally is a popular event year after year at CHS, and Duhrkopf intends to continue to sponsor the rocket launches next year. Photos of the students and rockets can be found included below this story.
