Dense Fog Blamed For Minor Bus Accident Near Irwin Tuesday Morning

At approximately 8:15 a.m. this morning (Tuesday), the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Transportation, Irwin, Defiance, Manilla and Manning Fire and Rescue Departments and the Shelby and Carroll County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) all responded to the report of an accident involving an IKM-Manning school bus. Upon arrival to County Road F24 east of Irwin, authorities conducted an investigation and learned that a wide-load vehicle was traveling east on F24 and was turning north onto Vine Road. The IKM-Manning bus was westbound on F24, and because of dense fog, did not see the other vehicle making the turn. The bus hit the wide load sign on the other vehicle, causing damage to both. At the time of the accident, 60 students, a chaperone and the bus driver were on the school bus. Three students and one adult were transported to Manning Regional Healthcare Center by Carroll County EMS for treatment of minor injuries. All other occupants were transferred to the Irwin school by the IKM-Manning School District.
