The City of Glidden has contracted a civil engineering firm, Veenstra and Kimm, Inc. from West Des Moines, to assist them in the overhaul of their wastewater management facilities. The city’s current treatment plant is beginning to show its age, and President and project manager for the company, Bob Veenstra, says the city has a unique situation for a town its size.
Building a whole new facility and converting to a lagoon system are the other options for the city. There are several factors that influenced which project they were to support.
With those factors considered, the city council has determined converting to a lagoon system is the logical choice to be a cost-effective solution to the city’s water management. According to Veenstra, this option is likely the best long-term plan, and he says they will have a more accurate cost analysis next month.
Early assessments place construction to finish in early to mid-2020. The city will need to apply to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for an amendment to their wastewater permits to allow for this conversion to occur.
