Deputy Jake Shirbroun is the newest member of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, and he says he got an unusual start to his career with them during the first major storm of the year on Monday.
Shirbroun, who was born and raised in Coon Rapids, went into the Marine Corps right after school. He says he spent about six years in the military.
After leaving the Corps, he worked for Cellular Advantage in the Des Moines area for seven years, but he found himself drawn back into a life of service. He went to work for the Coon Rapids Police Department and went through the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, bringing him to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office as a seasoned, certified law enforcement officer. He said the position appealed to him because of the bigger area covered, the increased responsibilities and a move away from policing people he has known his whole life. He added that the major benefit for him will be not having as much time on call. Once done with work, he will be able to relax and spend more time with his family without the worry of being called away. He said that although there are a lot of people in the southeast portion of the county who know who he is, he wants to tell everyone else that he is really a pretty easy-going guy.
Shirbroun says after working with many of the other department members as a Coon Rapids officer, he is really looking forward to becoming a part of their team. He says that after training in some of the newer duties, such as serving papers, learning the ins and outs of the towns the office contracts with and working with the jail, he will be ready to hit the ground running. Shirbroun and his wife of 10 years, Jennifer (Jenn), and their two sons, Hunter who is six and Aiden who is one and a half, live in Coon Rapids.
