Two Iowa legislators, District 12’s Representative, Brian Best, and District 6’s Senator, Mark Segebart, attended the Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Directors meeting on Monday night to answer questions on the upcoming legislative session’s effect on school districts. The state is facing an estimated $132 million shortfall this year due to a decrease in expected tax revenue, and Superintendent Rob Cordes has concerns about possible budget decreases as a result.
Best told board members that budget cuts would be unlikely under Gov. Terry Branstad and the new legislature.
Even if funds were not cut, uncertainty still remains for future budget years. Board member, Gina Badding, asked Segebart and Best where next year’s funding stands.
After the discussion, the board thanked the legislators for coming to the meeting and hearing their concerns. Segebart and Best will take the those concerns with them when they return to session on Jan. 7, 2017.
