CHS Students Build And Fly Homemade Drones

Three students in Carroll High School’s (CHS) STEM Research and Training (STAR) class finished work Tuesday on a drone building project. Seth Beberniss, Sullivan Drumheller and Tanner Finken spent nearly six hours in total over the span of 10 days to assemble, program and test-fly the drones. Physician and drone enthusiast, Dr. Mark Miner, traveled to CHS to assist instructors, Kent Muyskens and Angie Emerick, with teaching the students. Miner has a passion for drones and wants to share that love with others.

Buying a pre-assembled drone can cost thousands, but building one can cost much less, around $500. The estimated total cost of this educational effort is about $3,000, and the Carroll High School Foundation (CHSF) offered to cover the expense of drone parts and Dr. Miner’s fees. CHSF Secretary, Robert Peters, attended the seminars and says projects like this fit their mission statement.

After assembly was complete, the students went outside to fly their assembled drones. Peters says the foundation looks forward to helping provide students at CHS with more opportunities like this in the future.
