The Lake City Council met Monday night and reviewed a policy that many cities across the country have started drafting. A rough draft of a policy regarding the use of body cameras for the Lake City Police Department was discussed. Lake City Administrator, Lee Vogt, says this change did not come as a surprise.
Law enforcement officers across the country are facing accusations of excessive use of force. Vogt says that they have no concerns regarding that issue, but it makes sense for the city to have a policy in place if that event arises. The proposed procedural guidelines will set a clear and defined set of rules for officers using the body cameras.
The Lake City Police Department is not the first law agency in the county to look into these devices.
Because this is not a change to city ordinance, several reading of the policy are not required. The Lake City Council will vote on the guidelines for body cameras at their next meeting on Nov. 7 in the Lake City Council Chambers at 6 p.m.
