Conservation And Carroll County Coming Together To Resolve Sauk Rail Trail Encroachment Issue

The Carroll County Conservation Board and the Carroll County Board of Supervisors have been working for years to resolve an encroachment issue on the Sauk Rail Trail near Maple River. In today’s (Monday) meeting, Conservation Director, Jason Christensen, joined Carroll County Attorney, John Werden, in a discussion on the next steps in a joint plan to move forward with clearing the encroachment area. Werden said the family members of the landowner of record who is deceased, Merlin H. Loew, have been making an effort to abide by the county’s request in clearing the land.

Christensen said the conservation department is offering to help in any way they can with the physical removal of items that are in the trail right of way. He also presented to the board the reason for their requesting the clearing of this area.

He said there would be an open shelter, a waterless restroom and a parking area for approximately 10 to 12 vehicles. Supervisors agreed that the best solution is to have everyone working together toward this common goal, but Marty Danzer suggested that a timeline may be necessary to ensure the conservation department can move forward with their plans.

The board agreed to allow 90 days for the removal of items that are encroaching on the trail so that conservation improvements can move forward in 2017.
