On Friday, July 8, the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs announced they will be distributing nearly $1.7 million in grants to five newly designated and two current Iowa Great Places Communities. Ron Reischl of Main Street Manning is pleased to announce their community will be receiving one of them.
Reischl said the plan is to tie the two of these amenities together in the community.
Manning began planning for the park in 2014, and developed a master plan as part one of the five pieces of their Great Places funding application. The clock is running on this portion of the project and the grant money they have been awarded on Friday will be used to help the trail portion follow that same timetable established for the park.
Reischl said they still have a couple holes in the current trail system that they are working on: one to get across the Nishnabotna and the other from Manning Regional Healthcare Center to Great Western Park. The Milwaukee Trestle Park is located on the north end of Manning in and around where the previous Manning Ag Center was located on Front Street. Plans for the park include a sand volleyball court and outdoor exercise pieces. The park will cater to adults but will have features and equipment that can be enjoyed by all.
