Carroll Community School District Director of Transportation, Tom Reiter, made a presentation to the board of directors at last night’s (Thursday) meeting to consider a change to the time school starts and dismisses at Fairview and Adams Elementary Schools. Reiter originally approached Elementary Principal, Sue Ruch, with the idea to have classes start and let out 10 minutes earlier at Fairview, which would then alter the Adams schedule to five minutes earlier for start time and dismissal.
Reiter reported the buses are full, and when you put pre-schoolers through upperclassmen on the bus, it is not an ideal situation. He would like to get the younger, in-town students off the bus right away before picking up the other students at the middle and high schools.
Board member, Jen Munson, asked about the increased costs in running this extra route, to which Superintendent, Rob Cordes, replied, the cost would be minimal compared to the alternative.
When considering the impact on the elementary students, Ruch says she doesn’t see this creating any issues or having students being more tired because of the early start.
This option, Reiter said, will also get those younger kids off the bus and home sooner. The board approved a motion to change the instructional start times at Fairview to 8:20 a.m. which would alter them at Adams to 8:15 a.m. Both will then get out early to keep the time spent at school the same.
