Audubon Schools awarded $300,000 CCLC grant to launch out-of-school programing

Kindergarten students through grade 4 will have plenty to do this summer as the Audubon Community School District is set to launch an out-of-school time educational program. The program is being funded by a recently awarded $300,000 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) grant. Elementary Principal Sam Greave says, “This program will provide a familiar, safe place for students to relax, interact with peers, and grow after school…participants will have fun while learning life, service, and citizenship skills.” The program is geared towards enhancing State or local reform efforts in order to improve a student’s academic achievement and overall development.

Superintendent Brett Gibbs says the grant-review team was very impressed by the community partners which had signed on to help support out-of-school experiences; with students visiting several partner sites through anticipated community engagement activities. Funds provided by the CCLC grant will be used to pay staff and offset expenses, plus allow students who qualify for free & reduced lunches to be able to attend the program for free while other students may attend for $50 a week per child.

The program will run through the 2018-2019 school year, but district officials hope to extend it beyond those dates. Out-of-school summer programming will begin July 5, 2016, and once fall classes resume it will continue after regular school hours. Space is limited and in order to participate a student must pre-register. To learn more about the program, its hours of operation, or to register a child visit the Audubon School District’s website.
