The Iowa Department of Natural Resources received reports Sunday that there was still oil leaking from near the dredge on the east side the Storm Lake marina. A Buena Vista County Deputy confirmed there was a substantial sheen spreading outside of the booms used to contain a previous oil leak. A second ring of booms was placed around the dredge, booster and tug boat. Officials from Storm Lake and the DNR were unable to locate the source of the leak and have requested assistance from the contractor, Dredge America. Sphagnum moss was used to absorb the vegetable-based oil. Though not a petroleum-based leak, the oil will still pull oxygen out of the water bringing risk to fish. The DNR sent a notice of violation to the City of Storm Lake last week requesting an update to their emergency spill response plan. The DNR continues to monitor the discharge and cleanup activities.
