UPDATE–Ida Grove Man Wanted On Attempted Murder Charges Apprehended In Fort Dodge

An Ida Grove man wanted for attempted murder in Sac County was captured at a Fort Dodge Walmart late yesterday (Wednesday). The Sac County Sheriff’s Office received a tip that 36-year-old Jeremy Werneburg would be picking up a prescription at Walmart. They contacted the Fort Dodge Police Department, who responded to the Walmart store located at 3036 1st Ave. S. The first officer on the scene, Matt Burns, suffered an injury to his left knee during an altercation in attempting to arrest Werneburg. Burns was forced to use his Taser to gain control. The Sac County Sheriff’s Office was notified at 6:42 p.m. last night that Werneburg was in custody. Werneburg is being held at the Webster County Jail and has been charged with Assault on a Peace Officer Causing Injury and Interference with Official Acts Causing Injury as well as the Sac County Attempted Murder charge. The Sac County Sheriff’s Office was searching for Werneburg on allegations that he purposefully struck a Glidden man, 31-year-old Kyle Freese, with his vehicle on Sunday night, Feb. 14, outside the Carnarvon Inn. Freese is listed in stable condition at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. The car Werneburg was driving at the time of the incident was located late last night in the K-Mart Parking lot in Cherokee. The vehicle has been seized by Sac County authorities and will be processed for evidence. At least six law enforcement agencies assisted with running down leads in this investigation, and the Sac County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page had over 125,300 views, generating useful tips and information.
