Limited gym space for youth clubs moves CCSD to consider expanding facility hours

Trying to schedule gym space for his local youth club practice has been a challenge for 4th grade basketball coach Greg Perkins. The issue brought him before the Carroll Community School District Board during their meeting earlier this week where he made a request; asking to make the gyms available Wednesday nights and all day on Sundays. Superintendent Rob Cordes read the current school policy for the board.

Typically custodians are in charge of clean-up and securing the building following weekday activities. Cordes says on Sundays there is no support staff at the buildings which brings up one of his main concerns when it comes to opening up the facilities.

Cordes and Board President Duane Horsely add that a new space for teams to practice will be opening up in the near future which may alleviate some of the pressure.

During the discussion the board learned that any school employee may use the facilities which gave Board Member Jen Munson an idea.

Should an employee sponsor an activity their presence would be required for the duration of the event and they would be responsible for securing the building. In lieu of a sponsor Perkins made this suggestion.

Cordes indicated the schools coaches are currently experimenting with a double-swipe lock/unlock process this sports season, and the idea may be feasible. For now the board will take the matter under consideration with further discussion to follow at a future meeting.
