The Department of Natural Resources is now taking applications for their Derelict Building Program, which offers Iowa communities of 5,000 residents or less financial assistance to address neglected structures which have been vacant for a minimum of six months. The program’s main focus is landfill diversion through recycling and reuse of building materials. Since its inception in 2011, they have assisted 56 communities, diverted over 35,000 tons of materials and saved over $1 million in landfill disposal costs.
