At about 2:00 pm Wednesday afternoon the city of Lake View shut down the city’s wells in order to prepare for a big painting project at the city’s water tower. During the overnight hours tonight about half of the tank, around 150,000 gallons of water, will be removed and in the morning the tower will be shut off and drained. Public Works Director Lon Buse says that’s when crews from K&W Coatings of Elkader, Iowa will move in.
The tower’s color scheme will be slightly altered as the underside will be painted a darker blue in an attempt to help hide any discoloration and dirt. The upper section will be painted white with some red at the top in order to mimic the city’s logo. Even though the tower will not be operational during the painting project residents of Lake View may not even notice. The city’s water will continue to be treated at the water treatment plant and, though there may be fluctuations, water pressure will still be maintained using the well’s own pressure which is set at about 380 gallons per minute. Buse says that kind of pressure is bit too much and crews have installed pressure relief valves on three of the city’s fire hydrants.
The pressure relief valves will be located near the nursing home, Dixieland mobile home park, and at 30 Acres campground so residents should expect to see water being released onto the ground at those locations. During the three to four week project tap water will continue to be safe for human consumption and it will not be until the water tower is brought back online that the city will need to test for bacteria.
