Several State Incumbents Are Headed To The June Primary After Friday’s Filing Deadline

Friday’s 5 p.m. deadline has passed and we now know which candidates for statehouse, statewide and congressional offices submitted the paperwork required to have their names placed on June Primary ballots. Locally, Fourth Congressional District Congressman, Republican Steve King, will be facing off in the June 5 primary against Cyndi Hanson of Sioux City. On the Democratic side of that race, three candidates have filed: Leann Jacobsen of Spencer; John Paschen of Ames; and JD Scholten of Sioux City. Charles Aldrich of Clarion is the sole candidate for the Libertarian party. Republican incumbent State Senator for District 9, Jason Schultz of Schleswig, has filed and is running unopposed, but Republican incumbent for Iowa House District 10, Mike Sexton of Rockwell City will be facing a challenger, Tom Hoefling of Lohrville. On the Democratic side of the aisle in that race, one candidate, Jake Ronald Thompson of Rockwell City, filed the required paperwork. State Representative for House District 12 Republican incumbent, Brian Best has no challengers in the June primary, but will be going up against Democratic newcomer, Peter Leo of Manning, in November. No challengers filed in the House District 18 race, leaving Republican incumbent, Steven Holt of Denison, the sole candidate. There is a full slate of candidates for House District 47 as incumbent, Republican Chip Baltimore is not running for re-election. Three Republicans have filed papers, Donald Batt of Boone, Victoria Sinclair of Boone and Phil Thompson of Jefferson, and they will be joined on this November’s ballot by Democrat David Weaver of Rippey and Libertarian, Patrick Shaw of Boone. The filing deadline for county races is Wednesday, March 28.
