Iowans can now add their state-issued driver’s license or ID to Google Wallet, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT). The mobile ID can be used at more than 200 TSA checkpoints nationwide, including Des Moines and Eastern Iowa airports, as well as at participating businesses equipped with mobile ID verification technology. Motor Vehicle Division Director Kathleen Meradith-Eyers says, “We’re thrilled to offer Iowans another option for using mobile ID. Adding your Iowa driver’s license to Google Wallet is a smart, secure way to carry your ID—and a big win for convenience. Mobile ID puts you in control of your information while making everyday moments, like airport travel and age verification, fast, easy, and private.” Iowa residents with a valid license or state-issued ID and an Android device running Android 9 or later can add their ID by opening Google Wallet and following the in-app instructions. The digital ID is encrypted and protected by user authentication. If a phone is lost or stolen, the mobile ID can be remotely erased. Iowa driver’s licenses and IDs are also available for use with Apple Wallet. While mobile ID offers convenience, it remains voluntary and does not replace the need to carry a physical ID.
