James Grettenberg of Carroll

James Lee Grettenberg, age 89, of Carroll passed away on Monday, January 20, 2020 at Regency Park in Carroll.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, January 24, 2020 at St. John Paul II Parish – St. Lawrence Church in Carroll with Fr. Kevin Richter as Celebrant.  Music for the Mass will be by Kate Cuddy and the St. Lawrence Choir with Kathleen Macke as Cantor. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery at a later date with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.
Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Thursday where there will be a Rosary at 6:30 P.M.  Additional visitation will be held from 9:30 – 10:15 A.M. at St. Lawrence Church on Friday morning.  Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolence may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to St. Anthony Hospice and may be left at the funeral home or the church.
Born on September 24, 1930 in Coon Rapids, IA, he was the son of Maurice and Bernice (Churchill) Grettenberg.  He grew up in Coon Rapids and graduated from Coon Rapids High School.  Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served four years during the Korean Conflict.  Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Coon Rapids and was married to Marlita Bliss on December 28, 1958 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll.  Jim was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, the Carroll American Legion, and the Carroll Genealogical Society.
Jim is survived by his wife Marlita of 63 years of Carroll; his children: John Grettenberg (Vicki) of Conway Springs, KS, Janean Griffith (Leoanrd) of Omaha, NE, and David Grettenberg of Tofte, MN; three grandchildren: Callie, Betsy, and Jonathan; six great-grandchildren; two brothers: Joel Grettenberg (Sandra) of Lake City, MN, and John Grettenberg (Nancy) of Coon Rapids; a sister Judith Conlon of Philadelphia, PA; and several nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Maurice and Bernice Grettenberg and his mother and father-in-law Everett and Alita Bliss.
