Janis Berger of Carroll

Janis Berger, 65 of Carroll, died Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 16, 2019 at St. John Paul II Parish – St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Shinoj Jose. Music will be by Jane Heithoff and the St. Lawrence Choir. Lectors for the Funeral Mass will be Sherry Greteman and Susan Uhl. Gift Bearers will be Janis’ grandchildren. Casket Bearers will be: Melvin Berger, Michael Berger, Dale Berger, Gerald Berger, Kevin Warner, and James Halbur. The Breda American Legion Auxiliary
and the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary will form an honor guard for the Funeral Mass. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 4 p.m. on Friday, where there will be a rosary at 5 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church on Saturday morning were additional visitation will be held from 9-9:45 a.m.  Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for the Berger family at www.sharpfuneral.com.
Born on June 20, 1954 in Carroll, Iowa, Janis Ann was the daughter of Leonard and Darlene (Thede) Halbur. She was raised on a farm near Maple River, attended St. Francis of Assisi School in Maple River and later graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School. Janis furthered her education at Central College where she graduated in 1973. Janis was united in marriage to John Berger on June 27, 1975 at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. She was employed at H&R Cleaners as a seamstress, General Electric, and also operated at day care for 18 years. Janis was also employed at Swan Lake Office, Good News Book Store, Sunnybrook of Carroll, and Carroll Cleaning Supply.  She enjoyed being active in her grandchildren’s lives and supporting all of their activities. She enjoyed nature, birds, reading, decorating and going to parades. Janis volunteered for many organizations including Swan Lake Educational Center, Family Development Center, Relay for Life, St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary and was also a Girl Scout leader. Janis was a member of St. Lawrence Church, St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary, and Breda American Legion Auxiliary.
Janis is survived by her husband John Berger of Carroll; her children: Sheila Holm of Ankeny, Karla (Chris) Van Roekel of Glidden, and Matt (Amy) Berger of Ankeny; 9 grandchildren: Keisha Holm, Hannah Messerich, Karson Holm, Emma Messerich, Dylan Berger, Kayden Holm, Dawson Berger, Kamryn Holm and Clare Messerich; her siblings: James (Kitty) Halbur of Carroll, Judy (Dave)
Moorhouse of Glidden, and Joyce (Wayne) Morris of Jefferson; her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law:  Sherry Greteman of Carroll, Jeanie Halbur of Carroll, Gerald (Diane) Berger of Arcadia, Dale (Jolene) Berger of Arcadia, Michael (Linda) Berger of Arcadia, Melvin (Laurie) Berger of Westside, Jane Berger (Max Stall) of Lytton, Barb (Kevin) Warner of Carroll, Karen Wiese of Arcadia, Jolene Berger of Arizona and Brian Origer of Carroll; as well as other extended relatives and many friends.
Janis was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Darlene Halbur; her parents-in-law, Othmar and Marita Berger; her brothers, Joseph D. Halbur and John L. Halbur; and her sister-in-law, Marlene Origer.
