Texas Congressman, Joaquin Castro, Says During Stop In Carroll Sen. Warren Is The Candidate To Unite Democrats And Beat Trump

Texas Congressman, Joaquin Castro, was in Carroll Wednesday afternoon to campaign for Democratic presidential candidate, Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Castro’s twin brother, Julián, announced at the beginning of the year that he was ending his campaign for president, and Castro says it was only a few days later that they decided they would be putting their support behind Warren. He says they were shooting an endorsement video in the neighborhood where he grew up in San Antonio, and it reinforced to him the reasons he is campaigning for Warren.

Recent polls from RealClearPolitics show former Vice President, Joe Biden, leading in Iowa with 21.5 percent, followed by Vermont Senator, Bernie Sanders at 18.8 percent, South Bend, Ind. Mayor, Pete Buttigieg with 18 percent and Warren at 16.5 percent. Castro says Iowa is no stranger to tight races, citing the 2008 and 2016 caucuses, and encourages Iowans not to read too much into poll numbers.

Castro adds after seeing the other candidates and campaigns up close that he is confident she is the candidate who can pull together the Democratic Party and win the 2020 election. One attendee noted many policy similarities between Warren and Sanders, and asked Castro what separates the two.

Following the meet-and-greet, Castro traveled to Denison for another campaign event with his brother. Full audio from Castro’s stop in Carroll can be found included with this story on our website.
