Several Bills Make It Through First Funnel Week In Iowa Senate

Last week marked the first funnel of the 2020 legislative session and several bills are still active after the winnowing process. Those still alive in the Senate include a bipartisan bill mandating health benefits for families with children suffering from Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders (PANDAs). This is an illness medical professionals believe begins with strep throat bacteria that can morph into a brain disorder in children under the age of 18. This, however, can be stopped with antibiotics, but parents need to ask for a strep test. The Senate will also continue working on a reduction in the number of licensure requirements for some Iowa workers. Senator Mark Segebart says Iowa is one of the most heavily licensed states in the country with nearly one-third of the workforce maintaining some form of license to do their jobs. In many instances, this is necessary and in the best interest of public safety. However, in some professions, it is unnecessary, burdensome, expensive and can also be a method to reduce or eliminate potential competitors. Senate File 2114 will provide for universal recognition of licenses from other states for most circumstances and streamlines the process for some felons to obtain a license after having completed their sentences. It will also lower fees for low-income Iowans applying for a professional license for the first time.
