Nearly All Crops Are In And Warm Weather Is Expected To Move Them Along

Although crop producers across Iowa only saw an average of 2.7 days suitable for fieldwork in the last week due to widespread rainfall, spring planting is nearly complete. “Iowa is expecting warmer temperatures over the next few days,” says Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Naig. “The heat that is expected this week should help move the crop along.” The USDA National Agricultural Statics Service’s Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report for the week ending Sunday, May 31 shows 98 percent of the corn crop and 95 percent of soybeans are in. this is two and three weeks ahead of last year respectively. Corn emergence is at 93 percent while 76 percent of the soybean crop has emerged. Corn conditions have improved and are now at 85 percent good to excellent while soybeans are rated at 81 percent good to excellent. Last week’s weather brought rain totals from 0.12 inch in Remsen to 4.29 inches in Tripoli with a statewide average of 1.57. The normal is 1.07 inches. Temperatures ranged from near normal in western Iowa to the highest recorded temperature of 89 degrees, 12 above normal, in Elkader and the low of 43 degrees, eight below normal, in Stanley.
