Miller Will Become Longest Serving Attorney General In U.S. History Tomorrow

Iowa Attorney General, Tom Miller, will break a national record Saturday as the longest-serving attorney general in U.S. history. After 37 years and five days, Miller will break the record of Frank J. Kelley, Michigan attorney general, who served from Dec. 28, 1961 to Jan. 1, 1999. “I want to thank Iowans for their support over 37 years,” Miller says, “and I want to salute the wonderful attorneys and staff that have worked here and understand the importance of public service.” Miller won his first election in 1978 and is now serving his 10th term. He did leave the office for a few years, from 1991 to 1995, to pursue private practice after a run at the governorship. During his tenure, he has led major multi-state cases, including the historic big tobacco settlement, the antitrust investigation of Microsoft and the $25 billion agreement on mortgage foreclosure abuses and servicing practices. Miller also started the nation’s first farm division in the Attorney General’s Office.
