Manning Man Arrested While Hunting Coyotes In City Limits Pleads Not Guilty To Carrying Weapons

A Manning man accused of hunting coyotes within Manning’s city limits pled not guilty to the carrying weapons charge filed against him in District Court for Carroll County. According to court documents, 36-year-old Trevor Martin Matheny, who has also reported residence in Sioux City, submitted his written not guilty plea Thursday. The charge stems from an incident on Dec. 21 on South Elm Street. An affidavit from the Manning Police Department alleges Matheny was found in possession of a shotgun, ammunition and hunting calls while lying in the grass behind several residences. Matheny did not possess a valid hunting license when the incident occurred. A pretrial conference has been scheduled for Thursday, March 26 with jury proceedings slated to begin Tuesday, April 28. The aggravated misdemeanor charge carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and $6,250 in fines. Matheny was also arrested by the Manning Police Department for carrying weapons on July 8 when authorities located a 15-inch knife in his possession during a traffic stop. That charge was dismissed in January after a defense motion to suppress evidence was approved.
