The great-grandson of one of the couples who donated land for the Stewart Memorial Community Hospital (SMCH) site in 1957, Arthur and Lela Holm, has made a generous donation to the current Putting People First renovation and expansion campaign. Lake City Mayor, Tyler Holm, recently presented $25,000 to the effort. “Like my great grandparents, I had the opportunity to give to the expansion of the hospital. It seemed right to give in this situation,” he says. Holm was born in South Korea, then adopted and raised in Lake City. After living in several other Iowa communities following his graduation, he returned to Lake City to be near family, eventually becoming owner of Greener by the Yard, a lawn care and landscaping business. This spurred an interest in local government as he wanted to ensure his tax dollars and those of others are spent responsibly. This involvement with the city council led to his being elected Mayor in 2015. Holm also served on the committee to kick-start the expansion and renovation project at Stewart Memorial in 2017. He not only sees the benefit of the state-of-the-art facility from the perspectives of a business owner and as mayor, but also on a personal one through several surgeries and rehabilitation at Stewart Memorial. “We can’t afford to lose or do without the hospital,” Holm says. “Any bit I could do to make the project come to fruition was what I was willing to do. I’m a strong believer in supporting local business, and it seemed right to not only serve on the committee, but to make a donation.” Holm was also instrumental in securing a $50,000 donation from the city by encouraging the council to help fund the project.
