Jefferson Woman’s Post-Conviction Relief Application For 2016 Firearm Conviction Scheduled For Jan. 2021

A post-conviction relief hearing for a Jefferson woman convicted of selling an illegally modified shotgun has been scheduled to go before a judge early next year. According to Carroll County District Court records, 39-year-old Joey Ann Godwin pled guilty in February of 2017 to one count of unauthorized possession of an offensive weapon, a class D felony, and sentenced to up to five years in prison to be served concurrently with five-year sentences for felony theft and forgery out of Greene and Dallas Counties. Godwin was arrested on Dec. 22, 2016 by the Carroll Police Department after selling a 12-guage sawed-off shotgun during a controlled buy operation. Godwin’s relief application claims warrants were obtained improperly, prosecution withheld exculpatory evidence and ineffective assistance of counsel. The Carroll County Attorney’s Office has denied Godwin’s assertions of any wrongdoing by law enforcement or attorneys involved in the case. Her post-conviction relief trial will go before a judge on Thursday, Jan. 21. Godwin is currently in custody at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women in Mitchellville.
