Fundraisers Established For Lake City Family And Three Girls Injured In House Fire

As is common in the communities throughout our listening area, individuals, businesses and organizations rally around those who have suffered a tragedy or are in need. Just such an outpouring of compassion and empathy is surrounding a Lake City family as they care for their three young daughters who were injured in a house fire. The Lake City fire department responded to the home of Chris and Kim Holst on Olive Street, south of Highway 175, Thursday, Jan. 9 at approximately 10 p.m. When they arrived, they found the second story ablaze. Kim and the youngest girl, Kira, a first grader, were able to escape after being alerted by a smoke detector. The two others, sixth and seventh graders, Kjeirsten and Kendra, were trapped inside. Firefighters were able to get them out, but all three were airlifted to Iowa City for treatment of smoke inhalation and burns. An update says Kjeirsten and Kira have been released from the hospital. However, Kendra is in critical, but stable condition and will require more extensive medical care. Friends, family and loved ones have established one online fundraising account and another at any Iowa Savings Bank Branch under Holst Fire Account to help support the Holst family as they care for their children and try to rebuild after this devastating fire. A link to make an online donation can be found with this story on our website.
