UPDATE–Friday Morning Fire Near Lake City Destroys Several Outbuildings

Several outbuildings were destroyed following an early Friday morning fire about four miles northwest of Lake City. The Lake City Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 4:46 a.m. on a report of a hay fire in a hoop building on a property owned by Daniel Smith. Upon arrival, the fire had started to spread to the more than 100 haybales contained in the structure. The hoop building, a nearby barn and a shed were severely damaged by the time crews cleared the scene at approximately 11:15 a.m. According to Fire Chief, Lynn Boyd, the fire had burned at such a high temperature that it had melted the vinyl siding of the Smith residence and a detached garage. Boyd says they were able to prevent the fire from spreading to an adjacent cornfield. It is not clear what started the blaze, but an investigation is ongoing. The Auburn and Lytton Fire Departments and Calhoun County Emergency Medical Services assisted at the scene.
