DNR Investigating Fish Kill Caused By Manure Spill in Buena Vista County

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports they are investigating a fish kill near Albert City in Buena Vista County. DNR staff met with a hog producer, Kris Ehlers, on Sunday afternoon. Ehlers told state officials a valve on an aboveground storage tank had failed and released an undetermined volume of manure into a tributary of the North Racoon river. Investigators at the scene found the waste had pooled near the tank before it reached the stream through a grassed waterway. Staff found several dead fish, manure and elevated ammonia levels as far as four miles downstream of the spill. Water samples were taken for additional laboratory analysis. The DNR is monitoring cleanup and will consider appropriate enforcement actions.
