Coon Rapids Woman Killed In Two-Vehicle Accident Near Guthrie Center Saturday Afternoon

The Iowa State Patrol has released the details of a two-vehicle accident west of Guthrie Center Saturday afternoon that killed a Coon Rapids woman and left two others injured. According to law enforcement, the accident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Chestnut Road and Highway 44. Eighty-eight-year-old Mary Virginia Mingus was traveling southbound on Chestnut Road in a 2001 Ford Taurus. As she approached the Highway 44 intersection, she pulled out in front of a westbound 2016 Ford F150, driven by 43-year-old Jonathon Rodger Merk of Waukee. The pickup collided with the driver side of the Mingus car. Following the collision, both vehicles came to rest in the south ditch. Mingus was transported to Guthrie County Hospital by Guthrie County Emergency Medical Services, where she later died of her injuries. Merk and a 12-year-old passenger in the truck, Hunter Merk, were transported to Audubon County Memorial Hospital by Audubon County Emergency Medical Services for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The Audubon Fire Department, Guthrie Center Fire Department and Audubon and Guthrie County Sheriff’s Offices assisted at the scene.
