CHS To Expand Career And Technical Education Options With New Course Next School Year

A new class will be offered at Carroll High School (CHS) beginning next year that will explore career options for students who may not be interested in pursuing post-secondary education. Principal, Tammie McKenzie proposed the new course, Construction Trade Practices, to the Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education at their meeting earlier this week. According to McKenzie, the home repair class introduced three years ago has been popular, but it only touches on some of the basics. She says the new course will give students more practical experience.

A similar class had been available through Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC), but it was discontinued two years ago. Industrial Technology Instructor, Doug Leiting, is slated to be the teacher leading the CHS course and was unable to attend Monday’s meeting. However, he did prepare a brief video for the board explaining why the course should be offered and how it would work.

Additionally, the school would be eligible for increased funding through a federal program known as the Perkins Grant, which aims to further career and technical education. The class would not have any prerequisites and would be open to sophomores, juniors and seniors. The board voted unanimously to offer Construction Trade Practices with classes beginning in the fall.
