The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education reviewed their proposed Return to Learn plan at Tuesday’s meeting as they prepare for the beginning of the 2020-21 school year. The Iowa Department of Education is requiring all districts to submit a multi-part plan addressing COVID-19 to the state by July 1. According to Superintendent, Dr. Casey Berlau, the plan must contain at least three scenarios: students in classrooms, remote learning or a mixture of both. Berlau says the first would be the best-case scenario and cause the fewest issues for staff, students and families. However, Berlau says they also need to be prepared for the possibility off-site learning will be their only option come August.
The hybrid scenario involves a rotating schedule, some students at the school and some learning from home. Berlau says this also poses its own unique challenges.
While these Return to Learn plans must be submitted to the Iowa Department of Education by July 1, Berlau says they will likely be allowed to make any adjustments as the situation changes.
The district’s administrators worked with staff, neighboring schools and families to develop the plan in its current form. Through this collaboration, school officials determined it may be necessary to bring in additional school nurses. Berlau says teachers are also requesting additional professional development days to prepare for the challenges ahead.
The board is also exploring the purchase of additional devices and mobile hotspots for use by students who may lack access within their own homes. The full CCSD Return to Learn Plan in its current form can be found included below.
