Carroll Police Chief Pleased With Year-End And Traffic Enforcement Numbers

The Carroll Police Department and Carroll County Sheriff’s Office participated in the latest Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau Special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP). Carroll Police Chief, Brad Burke, says they were pleased to see some very low numbers for the three-week enforcement initiative.

Burke says it is good to see people being responsible.

He adds that he believes a culture shift may be partially responsible for the change in these numbers.

This, Burke says, may be the new normal. He says the number of speeding tickets was also low at only 26 citations and 28 warnings, as was the number of texting violations, three citations and one warning. He reports that over the course of the last year, they had a number of minor accidents that he believes resulted from distracted driving.

Burke says they were getting called to Grant Road about once or twice per day. Year-end numbers showed a decrease in many areas. Thefts, mainly shoplifting, stayed steady, OWIs and criminal mischief (vandalism) is down. The only place Burke says they are seeing remain static is in burglaries and assaults. This can include burglaries of vehicles as well. There was a big jump in one area.

There is one counselor located in Carroll and a good mental health program at St. Anthony Regional Hospital. Looking to 2020, Burke says he would like to see the state legislators address the medical costs for prisoners that is being picked up by counties and he would love to see an expansion from texting only restrictions to hands free.
