Carroll County Supervisors Explore Other Avenues To Meet County’s PPE Demands

The Carroll County Board of Supervisors met Wednesday afternoon, most via technological means, to continue discussion on the county’s ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Emergency Management Coordinator, Sara Anderson, securing personal protective equipment (PPE) for hospitals, long-term care facilities and first-responders is still their most pressing issue.

Anderson sought guidance from the supervisors on how they should proceed in finding the needed PPE, such as masks, gowns and face shields. Some of their orders are being filled but not fully. Locally, Graphic Edge in Carroll has started producing cloth masks, and Trophies Plus in Breda is making medical gowns to meet at least some of the demand. Face shields remain difficult to procure, and Neil Bock suggested healthcare workers could use rubber bands and plastic page protectors in an emergency. Rich Ruggles and Dean Schettler recommended they take advantage of the other options while they are available.

The supervisors directed Anderson to contact area manufacturers to determine what volume and type of materials they would need to fulfill the county’s need for masks, gowns and shields and bring that information back to the board. Anderson indicated they will explore all their options moving forward.

The supervisors have scheduled another special meeting for Friday, April 10 to continue the county’s COVID-19 response. That meeting begins at 1 p.m. and will be livestreamed via YouTube. A link to the livestream can be found included below.
